Tacoma Art Museum is honored to present an exhibition from internationally acclaimed Seattle artist Zhi LIN. His works focus on the experiences of 19th century Chinese laborers, whose vital story is nearly absent from American history books. Lin’s paintings resonate in our region. Their content is amplified by the legacy of historical racism exacerbated by contentious labor relations during the construction of the railroads, and the ensuing Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Such laws encouraged acts of violence and vigilantism against the Chinese migrants already living here, including the forced expulsion of Chinese people from Tacoma in 1885. This exhibition features a large scale video installation and intimate watercolors of sites with historical significance, including the City of Tacoma.
