Piquillo and La Périchole, two street singers, arrive in Lima, Peru on the Viceroy’s birthday, which is being celebrated on his own orders. Piquillo’s jealousy does not permit La Périchole to accept pay from other men so the two are close to starvation. The Viceroy has seen La Périchole and is smitten by her. He invites her to his palace. But by law, no unmarried woman may enter the royal household, so a husband must be found for his new favorite. Conveniently, Piquillo, made drunk by the Viceroy’s servants, is pressed into service. Neither he nor the tipsy bride recognize each other. He is furious when he discovers the deception and is imprisoned by the Viceroy. La Périchole tricks the Viceroy; the pair escape with the aid of a long incarcerated political prisoner. When the Viceroy discovers the lovers true devotion, he forgives them and all ends well. This is fun for the entire family! Nobody dies!
